From Raw Reads to Variants: Detecting SNPs within the Wolf Genome
REGULAR SEMINAR IN BIODIVERSITY AND EVOLUTION

Understanding the genomic landscape of the wolf (Canis lupus) is essential for deciphering its complex evolutionary history and informing conservation efforts. This seminar explores the bioinformatic journey from raw sequencing data to high-confidence variant calls using a dataset of 280 wolf genomes sampled across the species' distribution. I will discuss the difficulties encountered during the variant detection pipeline, and summarize the results of a basic population genetic analysis conducted using the obtained single nucleotide polymorphisms. Finally, I will present a short comparative analysis of these variants against an existing dataset.

Arkadiusz Dziech is an Assistant Professor at the Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences (Poland), specializing in mammalian genomics and next-generation sequencing (NGS). Driven by the conservation and monitoring needs surrounding grey wolf recolonization in Europe, his research focuses on wolf population genomics and genetics, alongside broader interests in wolf-dog hybridization, and ancient DNA (aDNA) analysis. He has seven years of university teaching experience, with an emphasis on applied statistics and bioinformatics workflows for Illumina short-read processing and single nucleotide variant (SNV) discovery.
