An international selection procedure is open for a Junior researcher Position (Reference BIOPOLIS 2023-47) with an non-fixed working contract under the Portuguese Labour Law, for an expected duration of 2 years, in the scope of the research project "ZoonoMed – Iberian species of the Mediterranean ecosystem as reservoirs for emerging zoonotic viruses – PTDC/CVT-CVT/0143/2021”, financed by national funds through FCT/MCTES, in the scientific area of Animal and Veterinarian Science, is available at CIBIO/Associação BIOPOLIS, focused on the study of emerging zoonotic viruses in Iberian mammalian hosts.
Admission requirements: Candidates must hold a PhD degree in areas compatible with the work plan. If the doctorate has been awarded by a foreign higher education institution, it must comply with the provisions of Decree-Law no. 66/2018, of 16th August, and any formalities established therein must be fulfilled by the date the employment contract is signed.
We seek candidates with (i) experience in preparation of biological samples for high throughput DNA and RNA sequencing; (ii) experience in bioinformatics analyses of high throughput sequencing data; (iii) experience in conventional molecular laboratory procedures for virus detection and characterization; (iv) experience in analyses of virus evolution and epidemiology; (v) experience in fieldwork for sample collection, particularly in the target species; (vi) experience in mentoring and training undergraduate and graduate students; (vii) experience in participating in international and multidisciplinary research projects; (viii) previous co-authorship in scientific publications relevant to the workplan; and (ix) solid work ethics and good teamwork skills. Preferably, the candidate should be able to demonstrate these abilities through his/her Curriculum Vitae.
Working plan: The candidate is expected to conduct laboratory work on virology, evolution and zoonoses. The work will involve procedures of viral RNA and DNA extraction, preparation of different library types for high throughput sequencing and data analyses; preparation of manuscripts and supervision of undergraduate and graduate students. The work might also require the candidate to participate in fieldwork for sample collection.
Applicable Legislation: Decree-Law no. 57/2016 of August 29th, amended by Law 57/2017 and Regulatory Decree No. 11- A / 2017 which approved the doctorate hiring regime destined to stimulate scientific and technological employment for all knowledge areas (RJEC); Portuguese Labour Code, approved by Law 7/2009 of February 12, in its actual form.
Workplace: The work will be carried out at the CIBIO-InBIO, in Vairão, Vila do Conde.
Monthly remuneration: The gross monthly salary corresponds to Level 33 of the Consolidated Table of Allowances (TRU) 2228.11 € before tax.
Jury composition: The Jury will be chaired by Dr. Joana Abrantes (CIBIO), having as effective members Dr. Ana M. Lopes (CIBIO) and Dr. Fabiana Neves (CIBIO) and substitute member Dr. Pedro J. Esteves (CIBIO).
Evaluation criteria:
The evaluation of the CV of the candidates, in particular the scientific merit and research experience, will take into consideration the elements presented for the last five years of activity falling within the scope of the specific areas of the tender (see admission requirements) and will be performed according to the following criteria:
1. The relevance of work experience for the announced position, proved in CV, in (50%):
a) experience in preparation of biological samples for high throughput DNA and RNA sequencing, bioinformatics analyses of high throughput sequencing data, conventional molecular laboratory procedures for virus detection and characterization, analyses of virus evolution and epidemiology, fieldwork for sample collection, particularly in the target species, mentoring and training undergraduate and graduate students – 30%;
b) experience in participating in international and multidisciplinary research projects – 10%;
c) previous co-authorship in scientific publications and technical reports – 10%.
2. Quality of the academic curriculum (40%):
a) Overall scientific coherence of the CV – 20%;
b) Diversity and quality of scientific indicators, including relevant published peer-reviewed articles and abstracts in the specific areas of the announcement (see admission requirements) – 10%;
c) Participation in international research projects – 10%.
3. Motivation for applying to this position (10%).
Candidate final classification system shall be given based on a scale 0 to 100.

The contract is expected to start on 01/09/2023.

Prior Hearing and Deadline for the Final Decision
After notification, the candidates have 10 working days to comment. The jury's final decisions shall be made within 90 working days, counting from the deadline for the submission of applications.
The present competition is exclusively aimed at filling the indicated vacancy and may be terminated until the homologation of the final ranking list of candidates and expires with the respective occupation of the job position on offer.
