José Reis is Senior Organisational Strategy Officer at the BIOPOLIS Strategic Projects and Innovation Lab (SPIn Lab), working on a part time basis. He supports the Board of Directors in the delivery of a range of strategic and innovative projects, including building partnerships with business, public and third sector organisations, and communication and dissemination initiatives. Recent projects include delivering ‘The Diary of a Scientist’ – an innovative science communication initiative delivered with Publico newspaper; and helping to coordinate the construction and operationalisation of the new Ancient and Environmental DNA facilities.
José is based in London where he works on Science Diplomacy initiatives, including promoting collaboration between Portuguese and British research institutions and developing knowledge transfer mechanisms and policy advice in Science and Innovation. José is a specialist in cities and in urban and regional development policy. He has worked as a senior consultant in urban planning, economic development, inward investment and innovation strategies for multiple cities and regions. Between 2019 and 2023 he worked as a Principal Policy Officer for Economic Strategy at the Greater London Authority, where he led on economic policy and strategy, including contributing to the Mayor of London’s approach to supporting recovery from the economic crisis resulting from COVID-19 and Brexit. He has previously contributed to developing London’s first Urban Resilience Strategy. José has previously worked as an academic researcher and lecturer in the universities of Porto and Cambridge. He is trained as a Civil Engineer and Urban Planner (University of Porto) and completed a PhD in Land Economy at the University of Cambridge in 2015.
