Advanced population dynamics (CANCELLED)
The Advanced Population Dynamics course is an upgrade of contemporary population dynamics. The course requires basic knowledge of Calculus, Linear Algebra and Programming, and familiarity with traditional Population Dynamics. The aim of the course is to stimulate deep interrogation of mathematical formalisms traditionally used in population dynamics and introduce contemporary approaches. It has recently become apparent that selection acting on unobserved heterogeneity is a fundamental issue in the mathematics of populations. As recognised in disciplines as diverse as Demography, Ecology, Evolution and Epidemiology, in any population, individuals differ in many characteristics and it is essential that researchers understand which of these are under selection and how selection processes operate. The course will introduce conceptual and methodological developments in demography, ecology, evolution and epidemiology.
PROGRAMME
The course is designed for a total of 25 hours, distributed as 5 hours per day over one week. Assessment will be based on a critical review on a chosen topic (2500 words) and a journal club presentation (30 minutes).
