Animal Welfare in BIOPOLIS-CIBIO: A Practical Guide to ORBEA and DGAV Procedures
22 May 2025 - Paulo Gama Mota and Ana M Lopes, BIOPOLIS-CIBIO | 14h30 | Hybrid Seminar

CASUAL SEMINAR IN BIODIVERSITY AND EVOLUTION
Animal welfare is an increasingly important concern in the research community, and researchers are asked to comply with the European Union’s guidelines on the use of animals in research. The ORBEA-BIOPOLIS-CIBIO is the Animal Welfare and Ethics Review Board and supports this mission by advising researchers on issues related to animal welfare, the application of the 3Rs, and by providing non-binding opinions on projects involving animals. This seminar is aimed at presenting the role and responsibilities of ORBEA, introducing its members, and clarifying how it can support researchers working at BIOPOLIS-CIBIO. The seminar will be divided in two parts: the first for presenting key ethical and regulatory considerations related to animal use in research. The second part will focus on guiding researchers through the process of filling in the form required by ORBEA and, where applicable, DGAV. The session is intended for all Group Leaders and researchers planning to carry out procedures involving animals, but it is open to all interested researchers and students. It will be an interactive seminar, offering the opportunity to raise questions and discuss concerns directly with ORBEA representatives.
ORBEA-BIOPOLIS-CIBIO is an advisory board to provide support and advice to CIBIO researchers on issues relating to animal welfare and ethics on animal research in accordance with current legislation (Decreto-Lei nº 113/2013), ensuring the good development of projects and compliance with European and national law relating to animal welfare and use in research. Current ORBEA-BIOPOLIS-CIBIO members are Paulo Gama Mota, Gonçalo Cardoso, Ricardo Jorge Lopes, Nuno Santos, Fernando Lima, Ana M. Lopes and Joana Abrantes.
