FOREST CONSERVATION & PRODUCTION - APPLICATION OF A SUSTAINABLE MANAGEMENT METHODOLOGY TO A CASE STUDY

STUDENT SEMINAR IN BIODIVERSITY AND EVOLUTION

The project Forestry Conservation & Production - Application of a Sustainable Management Methodology to a Case Study, was developed for the CAP competition - Innovation in the Forest Sector.
The aim of the proposal involved combining a productive forest to the conservation of biodiversity, fusing these two components through social function. The final goal was to have in the same forest area, production and conservation.

To this end, some measures were developed, specific to these two components, such as: use of mixed stands, use of tree species with different life cycles, creating a conservation-protection-production model and recovery of the riparian landscape. At the same time, cross-cutting measures, focused on reducing the risk of fire (fire risk evaluation software) and optimization of public participation (creation of a cooperative of producers and owners) were also defined.
Finally, the methodology was applied to a case study in the Scarps of the Douro River, where a management project was developed for an existing forest area.

Daniela Santos, João Archer e Sara Ramos finished their Bachelors in Landscape Architecture from the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto in 2014 and Valeria Ursino graduated in Landscape Architecture from the Sapienza University of Rome in 2014. The project was elaborated for the Spatial Planning course of the Master in Landscape Architecture from the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto in 2015 and the competition promoted by the Confederation of Portuguese Farmers, and was one of the 15 finalists of the competition.
