‘Keep talking’: making the best out of science communication
04 Oct 2024 - Raquel Ribeiro, BIOPOLIS-CIBIO and Centro Ciência Viva de Vila do Conde | 15h30 | Hybrid Seminar
REGULAR SEMINAR IN BIODIVERSITY AND EVOLUTION
Effective science communication is more crucial than ever as vertiginously rapid scientific advancement combines with pressing global challenges. This is particularly true concerning environmental sustainability as, besides formal environmental education been increasing, it is still not significantly affecting general views on the environment or triggering the needed behavioral changes. Aligned with this endeavour is the mission of CIBIO to disseminate scientific knowledge and promote public awareness and appreciation of biodiversity, and researchers, students and collaborators respond to this call making science communication activities and events part of the institution’s everyday life. Since 2022, CIBIO has been part of the association that runs Centro Ciência Viva de Vila do Conde - CCVVC, a science centre committed to promoting scientific literacy at a regional scale. This collaboration is extremely valuable for both parties and should be capitalized on either side in order to represent a true symbiotic relationship. This talk is an opportunity to forecast all work done and in progress and also exploring new possibilities. First and foremost, it will be a catalyser for us to keep talking.
Raquel Ribeiro has been working in science communication for over 12 years, incorporating CIBIO’s research with different cultural institutions as Serralves Foundation, Natural History and Science Museum of Porto University and, nowadays, Ciência Viva de Vila do Conde where she is part of the direction board. Nature conservation has been the driver of her professional life (and much of the personal life, too) but either the path in research and applied conservation biology always fell short to the expectations on the societal impact needed for action and change. Science communication in direct contact with different researchers and projects, is where she feels that her contribute can be the greatest. A natural born introvert, she is the living proof that science communication is for everyone willing to give it a chance.
