Visualizing Science: Design principles for Biologists

Information design explores the complexities and practice of transforming data and storytelling into clear, accurate and engaging visual representations.
This course delves into the art and science of information design, emphasizing the importance of visual communication in the dissemination of scientific knowledge. Participants will explore fundamental design principles, learn how to craft compelling narratives through visuals, and gain hands-on experience with tools and techniques specifically tailored in the field of Biology; whether by presenting results in a poster or a visual abstract that facilitates the dissemination of research findings at conferences or seminars.
PROGRAM
The course will imply four full days in duration
Day 1 – Understanding the fundamentals of visual communication
. The 7 plastic values
. Design principles for an effective layout.
. Introduction to information and composition
. Transforming complex data into narrative communication and storytelling;
Day 2 – Applying knowledge to the visual narrative and presentation
. Analyses of possible outcomes: the poster and the visual abstract;
. Practical work
. Presenting in a conference manner (open session) of the potentials of information design, with highlight in specific case studies.
Day 3 – Practical work follow-up
. Tutorial follow-up and hands-on work for each specific outcome worked with students.
. Practical work
Day 4 – Final session
. Analyses of ongoing outcomes, in a semi-final manner. Indication of final adjustments.

SELECTION CRITERIA
The course will be open to a maximum number of 10 participants.
75% of available student slots are reserved for BIODIV students.
Priority will be given to:
• 1st year and other PhD students attending the BIODIV Doctoral Program;
• PhD students attending other courses;
• Other post-graduate students and researchers.
(A minimum number of participants is required for the course to take place)

Registration fees do not include accommodation or meals.
No ECTS credits are awarded for attending the course. Participants receive a certificate of attendance without quantitative evaluation.
