1. We are seeking to recruit one field technician on a part-time basis – 14 hours per week – 40% of a full-time job (Reference BIOPOLIS 2023-67) to carry out field sampling, data collection and analyses within the LIFE WILD WOLF project (LWW; Grant Agreement 101074417). LWW is a collaborative project funded through the Environment and Climate Action (LIFE) programme that aims to improve conditions for land sharing between wolves and people in urban and peri-urban areas without losing the ecological roles of wild wolves and the cultural identity of local communities. The consortium consists of 18 partners from nine countries, with an overall budget of 7M€ and a duration of 56 months. The study area in Portugal will be located in the northwest region, comprising Peneda-Gerês National Park and surrounding mountains.
The selected candidate will develop work in the fields of wildlife ecology and conservation, carrying out tasks related to field surveys for population monitoring, systematic media content analysis to evaluate human attitudes towards wildlife, collection of quantitative data on public beliefs and perceptions about wolves via an online survey, data compilation related to wolf occurrence in peri-urban areas, analysis of collected data, and the production of technical reports.
2. Applicable Legislation: Portuguese Labour Code, approved by Law 7/2009 of February 12, in its actual form.
3. The selection panel will be formed by: Francisco Álvares (Principal Researcher), David Gonçalves (Assistant Professor) and Raquel Godinho (Principal Researcher).
4. The work will be conducted at CIBIO-InBIO, UP – Centro de Investigação em Biodiversidade e Recursos Genéticos, Universidade do Porto, located at Campus de Vairão, Vila do Conde.
5. The gross monthly salary corresponds to Level 16 of the Consolidated Table of Allowances (TRU) 1333,35€ before taxes, proportional to working hours.
6. Applications can be submitted by candidates of any nationality holding a BSc or an MSc in Biological Sciences or equivalent areas.
7. Skills and competencies:
i) Experience in wildlife field surveys and ecology, particularly with wolves and game species;
ii) Experience on fieldwork in the study area located in northwest Portugal
ii) Driving license, and experience in off road driving conditions;
iii) Experience in statistical treatment of ecological data.
The candidate should be able to work well within a team and have excellent English, Portuguese and communication skills. Furthermore, it is expected that the candidate possesses strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
8. Candidates will be ranked based on:
i) The relevance of work experience for the announced position (75%)
ii) Motivation for applying to this position (25%)
9. Candidate final classification shall be given based on a scale 0 to 100.
10. The jury may decide to select candidates to an interview (in person or by videoconference) to establish the final ranking if the difference between the classification of the top two candidates is less than 10 points (based on the criteria in 7). The jury may not award the position if the profile of the candidates does not meet the requirements of the project.
