A NEW MOTH SPECIES IN PORTUGAL

A NEW MOTH SPECIES IN PORTUGAL

The new moth species occurs in northern Portugal and south-east France and was described based on genetic and anatomical characteristics. However, the first clues about this species came from droppings of horseshoe bats.

CIBIO-InBIO researchers discovered the new moth species during fieldwork in Northern Portugal, where they were studying the diet of bats through the analysis of DNA from feces. This study was conducted under the scope of the EnvMetaGen CIBIO-InBIO project, within the InBIO Barcode Initiative.

The genetic evidence of the new species was observed in droppings of Rhinolophus bats, so the researchers named the new moth Ypsolopha rhinolophi. The resultant article, where Y. rhinolophi was described, has been called media attention.
