In an article published by the journal Transboundary and Emerging Diseases, a multidisciplinary team led by CIBIO-InBIO researchers, report for the first time the detection of adenovirus in a red squirrel trapped in central Portugal.
This study showed that this strain of the virus is very different from that detected in other European countries but is practically identical to that detected in South Korean squirrel populations.
These findings indicate the emergence of a new strain circulating in Europe, showing that it is very important to conduct more studies in order to better understand the virus that is circulating in nature.
