CIBIO-InBIO RESEARCH ON DOGS EVOLUTION CALLS MEDIA ATTENTION
“Tracing the origins and evolutionary paths of the Iberian and the Maghreb Dog (WOOF)” is one of the new CIBIO-InBIO research projects and aims to understand the evolutionary trajectories of past populations of dogs and wolves in Iberia and North Africa.
According to Ana Elisabete Pires, the research team intends “to study the origin of these populations [dogs and wolves] to find out, for example, if there is any sign that the first dogs that inhabited the Iberian Peninsula originated here or were brought from other places in the Mesolithic period”.
The project also counts on the participation of CIBIO-InBIO researchers Catarina Ginja and Simon Jonathan Morton Davis, and other researchers from the University of Lisbon as Cleia Detry (UNIARQ), and Archaeosciences Laboratory of Direção-Geral do Património Cultural.
