CIBIO-InBIO’S CONGEN RESEARCHERS PROMOTE A FIELD CLASS ON CONSERVATION GENETICS AT PAREDES DE COURA

Last week, from the 18th to the 20th of April, a group of students attending the first year of the MSc Course in Genetics, Biodiversity and Evolution of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto, had the chance to learn about biodiversity conservation in a field class which took place in Corno de Bico Protected Landscape, Paredes de Coura organized in the scope of the discipline Conservation Genetics, coordinated by Paulo Célio Alves.

With the collaboration of CONGEN researchers Francisco Álvares, Raquel Vasconcelos, Joana Paupério, Ricardo Lopes, Nádia Barros and Vanessa Mata, the students were engaged in a wide range of activities that included demonstrations of sampling techniques of mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians, as well as several lectures and seminars focusing on hot topics in this field, which took place at the Centre for Environmental Education and Interpretation of Corno de Bico Protected Landscape – CEIA.

These activities, developed under the protocol established between Paredes de Coura Municipality and CIBIO-InBIO, have attracted local media attention and led to a great coverage in regional social media platforms.

According to Tiago Cunha from Paredes de Coura Municipality, this protocol will be extremely important to disclose the knowledge of the biological heritage of this protected area and to reinforce the connection with CIBIO-InBIO and the University of Porto.
