Nuno Ferrand awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit by the President of the Portuguese Republic
The Director of BIOPOLIS-CIBIO, Nuno Ferrand, was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit by the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, this Thursday, July 11th, for his contribution to the development of science in Portugal.

The Order of Merit is a Portuguese honorary order that rewards meritorious acts or services performed in the exercise of any function, public or private, that show selflessness for the benefit of the community.

Nuno Ferrand is a Full Professor at the University of Porto, Founder and Director of CIBIO - Center for Research on Biodiversity and Genetic Resources and the associated laboratory InBIO - Research Network in Biodiversity and Evolutionary Biology.

He currently directs the European BIOPOLIS project, which involves the largest funding ever granted to a research center in Portugal. It is a joint project with France, through the University of Montpellier, and also with the Porto Business School of the University of Porto.

He created and was director of the Museum of Natural History and Science at the University of Porto. In partnership with Ciência Viva, he was responsible for the creation of the Biodiversity Gallery - Ciência Viva Center in June 2017.

He founded TwinLabs, a network of collaborative laboratories in African countries to promote the training of human resources in science and technology and the transfer of knowledge.

In Portugal, Nuno Ferrand also conceived the International Biological Stations of Mértola and Branda de São Bento do Cando, Arcos de Valdevez/PNPG (under preparation).

He also founded the publishing house Arte e Ciência, with the aim of publishing the best books on science in Portugal.
