THE COORDINATOR OF CIBIO-InBIO’S POLE IN THE AZORES PARTICIPATED ON A TEDx TALK
In a talk entitled “The pearl and the onion: thoughts on science and faith”, Professor Frias Martins addressed the links between faith and scientific reasoning, arguing that in order to understand the “self”, i.e. to be able to answer three questions: “what am I?”, “who am I?”, and “why am I?”, one should use different methodologies, such as science, philosophy and faith, respectively. Since these three areas focus on ideas, thoughts and procedures that intend to answer different types of questions, they should not be regarded as conflicting with one another. According to Prof. Frias, in this sense, it is perfectly possible for a scientist to cope with faith.
