Born in Água d’Alto, São Miguel, Açores (1946), PhD in Biological Sciences (1985), University of Rhode Island (USA), full professor at the University of the Azores since 1995. Specialized in Systematics and Evolution in Molluscs, and also interested in biodiversity and conservation in the Azores. PI of the research group CIBIO-InBIO/Universidade dos Açores. Organized international workshops for malacological research as well as congresses dealing with science and Azorian natural legacy conservation.
President of Unitas Malacologica. President of Sociedade Afonso Chaves and editor of ‘Açoreana’. Author of ‘Coastal Ecology of the Açores’, ‘Islands of Blue and Green’ and ‘The Princess’ Ring’, as well as the RTP/A documentaries ‘Misty Islands’, ‘A day and a night on the Submarine Banks’.
