My name is Eduardo Kivete Lutondo, and I have a degree in Biology from the Faculty of Natural Sciences at Agostinho Neto University in Angola. After completing my degree, I had the opportunity to take part in the first phase of the biodiversity internship programme for future young researchers and project managers, organised by the Kissama Foundation and sponsored by Nacional Geografique. This allowed me to work in conservation research as an assistant on different research projects, conserving, protecting, evaluating and analysing laws on Angola's biodiversity. This apprenticeship led me to develop a degree thesis on the Diversity and Distribution of Ungulates in the Luando River Floodplains - in the Luando Integral Nature Reserve (Malanje/Angola). Currently, as a Junior Technician, I am part of a project run by CIBIO/InBIO-UP, the Biodiversity and Genetic Resources Research Centre of the University of Porto, in cooperation with the Kissama Foundation and the Lubango Science and Technology Centre. In the Sustainable Human-wildlife Coexistence project, implemented in the Bicuar and Iona National Parks and the Cuatir Private Reserve in the provinces of Huila; Namibe; Cuando Cubango. I am the coordinator of the project "Assessing the distribution of, and the threat posed by bushmeat hunting to, the African golden cat at Maiombe National Park in Angola", funded by the Mohamed Bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund and with the support of the African Golden Cat Conservation Alliance (AGCCA). I applied for the PhD Programme in Biodiversity, Genetics and Evolution (FCUP and FCUL) because of its fascinating objectives, the excellent University and because I strongly believe that this PhD Programme will provide me with new tools and opportunities to expand my knowledge of Biodiversity, Genetics and Evolution, and will take me an important step closer to fulfilling my aspirations of a career as a wildlife conservationist and researcher.
