Nuno A. Fonseca obtained a first degree in Computer Science, an M.Sc. in Artificial Intelligence and Computation, and a PhD in exploiting parallelism in multi-relational learning at the University of Porto. He worked in academia as a lecturer and researcher, and in the industry as a senior programmer, system administrator and department manager.  After completing the PhD he started a postdoc at the Molecular Evolution group in the Institute for Molecular and Cell Biology (Porto, Portugal), and then joined INESC-TEC (Porto, Portugal) to become a senior research scientist.  In 2011 became a research scientist at EMBL-EBI (jointly in John Marioni and Alvis Brazma groups). Later became a Project Leader responsible for high-throughput sequencing data analysis and management in the Expression Atlas team at EMBL-EBI. In 2018 joined CIBIO/InBIO as the holder of the ERA Chair in Environmental Metagenomics. He left CIBIO/INBIO in 2021 and later moved to FairJourney Biologics to use bioinformatics and AI in antibody discovery. Since 2023 he is a bioinformatics scientist and head of IT and Bioinformatics at BIOPOLIS/CIBIO.

His research interests include the development and application of novel computational methods to address biological problems through the design of new algorithms, implementation of software pipelines, and exploiting machine learning. He is particularly interested in the use and integration of large datasets (big data), especially high-throughput sequencing data (e.g., genomic, transcriptomic, metagenomic), to generate the best possible biological hypotheses.
