Associate Professor
My principal research interests are in animal communication and mate choice behaviour, and also the behavioural ecology of human altruism and cooperation. I use a combination of field studies and laboratory mate choice experiments in order to understand the functional significance of mate choice and of the preferred phenotypes. I also investigate variation in human behaviour in relation to societal or life-history differences, to test hypotheses on the adaptiveness of human behaviour.
I am currently director of the Museu da Ciência da Universidade de Coimbra, and Associate Professor at the Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade de Coimbra.
