My PhD aimed to improve scientific knowledge of insular lotic systems, providing an inventory and spatiotemporal analyses of the benthic macroinvertebrate community, identifying the main environmental factors responsible for observed variations, giving emphasis to the chironomid community. My research is focused on the ecology, and taxonomy of macroinvertebretes of Azorean islands, and he has a special expertise in chironomids.
Currently research focus on the ecology and ecological status assement of Azorean lakes and streams. He is also studying the historical anthropogenic impacts on these ecosystems, using fossilized chironomids in sediments of lakes to reconstruct past environmental changes.
