Born in Lajes do Pico, Pico Island, Açores (1967). MSc in Biology (Ecology and Evolution, 2001), PhD in Biology (Zoological Anatomy and Taxonomy, 2005).
Main areas of research are related with evolutionary and biogeographical studies in oceanic islands. Works on (palaeo)biogeography, palaeontology, (palaeo)ecology and (palaeo)biodiversity of marine organisms in oceanic islands.
Organized international workshops for palaeontological research ("Palaeontology in Atlantic Islands") as well as congresses dealing with science and conservation in the Azores.
President of the Regional Council of "Ordem dos Biólogos". Author of the books "A Balada das Baleias", "Açores O Império dos Fósseis", "Os Fósseis de Santa Maria. 1- A jazida da Prainha" and "Lajes do Pico, À Ban Baxe Muro". Author of the music "Cidade", adopted as the official hymn of the town of Ponta Delgada.
