My current research focuses on the ecology of phytoplankton and phytobenthos of Azorean lakes and streams. I’ve studied the indicative value of microalgae for ecological quality assessment of these ecosystems, notably the trophic state and water quality.

I’m also studying the historical anthropogenic impacts on these ecosystems, using fossilized diatoms in sediments of lakes to reconstruct past environmental changes.
